OBJECTIVE

Develop an app that solves a first-world problem, and, includes a social feature. Accompany the app with a website and physical items that tie into the idea of the app. And, market the app.

IMPLEMENTATION

I created BartSmart, an app that alleviates hassles associated with the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system. It includes a social feature, and is accompanied by a website, a physical kit, and marketing materials.

BartSmart lists train schedules, commute times, and cost of trip; reports if there's parking at the station, where exactly it is, and how to get there; allows users to pay for parking and train fare by smartphone; notifies users if their friend's are aboard the train; and, alerts riders of their approaching stop. Below is a demo of the Parking feature.

This responsive website serves as a digital brochure for the app by explaining its features through bullet points and video demonstrations. It also includes a Disable feature, allowing users to disable their account if their phone is ever lost or stolen.

PHYSICAL KIT

Commuter Comfort Item: Hand Sanitizer—BartSmart
Commuter Comfort Item: Neck Pillow—BartSmart

The physical kit includes hand sanitizer and a neck pillow, alleviating the anxiety of touching germs and relieveing sleepy riders of neck pain, respectively. These items are a gift to purchasers of the app, and are sent after registration is complete.

Dashboards

Saved, recorded, and default information—such as route, parking station, parking space number, ticket scan section, ticket balance, friend setting, and alerts—are displayed in a dashboard, which acts as a homepage.

SCHEDULES
If at Station

Current station is recorded, choose destination station. departure times, arrival times, estimated one way travel time and fare are displayed.

If Elsewhere

Choose two stations to travel between. Departure times, arrival times, estimated one way travel time and fare are calculated and displayed.

Purchase Fare

Holds your information as it links to the Pay Train screen.

Save Route

Saves chosen route info until edited.

Choose Station

List view of alphabetized stations, or, illustrated line-map view--default, or, nearest station.

List view of level and space numbers, or floor plan view.

PAYMENT: PARKING
Space is Recorded

Once parked, your space number is recorded by the app.

Payment

Account connected to credit card, PayPal, Google Wallaet, etc. Input account information once and allow access on a login everytime basis, or, remember login/password for quicker future access.

Frequency Options

One-time payment, or multiple credits automatically deducted when car is parking in a space for 5 minutes.

Free Hours

Payment button is greyed-out when fee is not required.

History

A detailed history of payment and usage is on the website.

Current station is recorded, choose destination station, (roundtrip and recurring options available) then click “checkout”.

If Paying Elsewhere

Choose two stations to travel between, (roundtrip and recurring options available) then click “checkout”.

Payment

Account connected to credit card, PayPal, Google Wallaet, etc. Input account information once and allow access on a login everytime basis, or, remember login/password for quicker future access.

Digital Ticket

Once payment is made, a digital ticket barcode will appear on the screen. Users wave phone with this arcode displayed over the clippercard reader to check-in and -out of stations. The code will appear on the dashboard. An info bar will read how much balance remains.

FRIENDS
Facebook Friends

Link to fb friends and displays only the friends at the same station or on the same train. The link is lost when either party leaves the vacinity of the BART system.

Privacy

Visibility is regulated by permissions. Users are invisible to others until the visibility request is accepted. Visibility may be revoked at anytime by either party, or, a temporary “hide mode” (hide one-self from all or selected friends) may be set until user unsets this function.

Chat

Chat with visible friends.

ALERTS
Near Station

Sounds off when within x time/distance away from the destination station (default two minutes).

Transfer Stop

Sounds off when within x time/distance away from the destination station (default two minutes).

COMPETING SERVICES

Bart.gov

Offers fare calculator, simplifying the confusing ui of the ticket vending machine. Also has a reponsive app that includes a trip planner with easy to use ui. It gives the route to take the times and the fare it will cost. BartSmart differs in that it not only gives the route, the times, the fare, but it also allows users to purchase the fare right from their phone.

Bart Parking Garages

Currently some stations have a sign at the entrance of the garage that says either “spaces available” or “garage full”. BartSmart differs in that it not only tells users if there are spaces available or not, but it also plots exactly where those spaces are by level and space number.

Clipper Card

Add fare to card online, pay with easy swipe at card reader. BartSmart differs in that users can pay for parking anywhere (swiping at a machine is not necessary), saving users time.

Embark iBART

A trip planning app, giving schedules and fare cost. BartSmart differs in that users can purchase the fare right from their phone.
